Guatemala 2016

This Spring Break, I went on a mission trip to Guatemala with twelve of my friends. I had been to Guatemala once before last summer, so I was incredibly excited to be back!! I am happily scared because I have fallen more and more in love with this country. I don't know what that means for me, but I am willing to listen to what God has in store next! The people there demonstrate love and joy so well, and they do everything whole heartedly. They push me to surrender my life daily to glorify God and to do it joyfully with all of my heart. One evening before we did homeless ministry, we went to the local church's prayer service. Toward the end of the service, the people of the congregation gathered around our mission team, held hands, and all prayed out loud. Of course it was in Spanish, but my friends that can speak Spanish were able to pick out what they were praying for. They were able to hear them pray for our families, our churches, our school, our friends, our studies, and many other things. There weren't many dry eyes on our team during that time. What a powerful experience. I was also so happy to be able to grow closer to the twelve other girls I was with. We all experienced so much together in just one short week, and I would not trade it for anything!!! We all talk to each other in Spanish now. It's fun.

On day 1, we woke up and went to a church service, went back to the seminary for lunch, and then came back to the church to hang out with kids. We also walked the streets around the church and found a fun soccer area where the community came to play and watch.

Our dining room where we ate all of our meals! The food was prepared by Guatemalans so every meal was incredible. Lots of guacamole, yummy juices, and homemade tortillas!

We sanded and varnished a wooden wall in the church. I now feel fully capable of sanding anything that needs to be sanded now. Hit me up.

We played with the kids on a big soccer "field" the afternoon of day 2. It included frisbee, soccer (futball), dodgeball, american football, and anything else we or they could come up with. Like sprinting.

The seminary where we stayed was on a beautiful hill overlooking the city! We came back from our project just in time for the sunset one evening.

We hiked the active volcano in Guatemala! It could erupt any minute but we decided it was worth it. You gotta risk it to get the biscuit and we definitely got the biscuit. It was SO BEAUTIFUL. We hiked it with Pastor Mario, the pastor of the local church we worked in all week. He has lived in Guatemala all of his life and never hiked the volcano. He was so joyful the whole time.

We had a cookout the last night. The food was absolutely incredible and straight off the grill. We ended the meal with tres leches cake, and I went to bed very happy.
